Hair Extension Aftercare: How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Fresh & Healthy
Eva Enyong

Hair extensions are a beautiful way to add length, fullness, and versatility to your look, but proper aftercare is essential for maintaining both the extensions and the health of your natural hair.

Whether you wear weave, tape-ins, nano rings, micro rings, or fusion bonds, the right routine will help keep your extensions soft, smooth, and long-lasting.

The First 48 Hours Matter

After your installation appointment, avoid washing your hair for at least 48 hours.

This allows tapes, bonds, and attachment methods to fully settle and remain secure. Washing too soon can weaken the hold and affect the longevity of the install.

Once settled, aim to wash your extensions no more than 1–2 times per week using a sulphate-free shampoo.

Protect Your Extensions While Sleeping

Nighttime care plays a major role in preventing tangling, dryness, and matting.

Before bed:

  • Loosely plait or tie your hair
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase
  • Avoid sleeping with wet or damp hair

These simple habits help reduce friction and keep your extensions smoother for longer.

Keep the Hair Moisturised

Extensions do not receive natural oils from the scalp the same way your own hair does, so moisture is important for keeping them soft and shiny.

Apply lightweight oils or serums to the mid-lengths and ends only. Argan oil is a great option for maintaining softness without causing buildup around the bonds or tapes.

Avoid applying heavy oils directly to the roots or attachment points.

Be Careful With Heat Styling

While extensions can be styled with heat tools, excessive heat can shorten their lifespan.

For healthier extensions:

  • Always use a heat protectant
  • Keep styling temperatures moderate
  • Avoid applying direct heat to bonds, tapes, or rings
  • Limit daily heat styling where possible

Heatless styling methods such as rollers, braids, or flexi rods can also help maintain the hair while reducing damage.

Brush Gently

Extensions should be brushed carefully to prevent pulling or tension at the roots.

Use:

  • A soft-bristle or extension-safe brush
  • Gentle downward brushing from the ends upwards
  • Extra care around bonds and tapes

Regular brushing helps prevent tangling and keeps the hair looking smooth and neat.

Take Extra Care When Swimming & On Holiday

Chlorine, salt water, and excessive sun exposure can dry out extensions and affect their longevity.

If swimming:

  • Tie the hair into a braid or bun
  • Wear a swim cap where possible
  • Rinse the hair thoroughly afterwards
  • Apply conditioner to restore moisture

Using UV or heat protection sprays during sunny weather can also help protect the hair from dryness.

Wash Your Extensions Correctly

When washing your hair:

  • Use lukewarm water rather than very hot water
  • Wash gently without rough scrubbing
  • Avoid flipping your head upside down
  • Let the water flow downward naturally

This helps reduce tangling and protects the attachment points from unnecessary strain.

Don’t Skip Maintenance Appointments

Regular maintenance is essential for keeping your extensions secure, comfortable, and healthy-looking.

Most methods require maintenance or refitting every 6–8 weeks, depending on:

  • Hair growth
  • The extension method
  • Your maintenance routine
  • Lifestyle and styling habits

Delaying maintenance appointments can lead to tangling, slipping, or unnecessary tension on the natural hair.

Healthy Extensions Start With Proper Aftercare

With the right care routine, your extensions can remain beautiful, soft, and long-lasting while protecting the health of your natural hair underneath.
